Steel Fox Firearms Review

I am an avid supporter of smaller online gun stores. They typically have much cheaper prices and better customer service. At least, you can expect to be answered from them much quicker than you would expect to be answered by Bud’s gun shop or a company of the same stature. So when I went to the Steel Fox Firearms website, I knew that I could expect to see some good things.

Who is Steel Fox Firearms?

Steel Fox Firearms began as a storefront in the heart of Downtown Deland, Florida. Actually, the company did not even start out as a gun store, but a coin gallery. One thing led to another, getting their  FFL license, and becoming one of the better locally known gun stores. After a recent expansion, Steel Fox digitized, moving much of their stock of Firearms, antique firearms, and  80% lowers on their new website, effectively become an online gun store.

What Does Steel Fox Firearms sell?

Steel Fox Firearms, the online gun store that is, has a wide selection of Firearms. From EDC and Concealed carry tools,  to a plethora of custom AR-15 parts available to their customers. I like the idea that they are able to seamlessly mix in 80% lowers along with completes, as most times, these two facets of the industry are kept well away from each other.

Steel Fox Firearms sells hunting rifles, Conceal carry pistols, and shotguns. They have a few accessories too, along with some milsurp oil from Germany. Apparently it is good stuff.

They also sell AR9, AR-10, and AR-15 parts and kits. I ended up buying an AR-15 rifle kit from them, myself. I may end up eventually purchasing one of their .300 blackout uppers as I have been wanting to see what that cartridge can really do with hogs.

They also sell Polymer 80 Glock 19 and other build kits from P80. These are also 80% frames and can be sent to your house. I haven’t done one of these, but I have heard that you can usually come out with a Glock platform handgun for much cheaper than you might buy something from OEM Glock.

Is Steel Fox Firearms User Friendly?

Steel Fox Firearms website is pretty neat looking compared to a lot of the other online gun stores out there. Oftentimes, smaller online companies are very barebones, so I was surprised to see that Steel Fox had a website that looked like it was made in this age. There is a search engine on the website that customers can use to browse their products via specialized search queries. The Category menu is small, with only  Firearms, AR-15, AR-9mm, AR-10. .300 Blackout, Polymer 80, and Accessories being the main categories. This menu, however, drops down into more complex queries so customers can efficiently search that way.

Loading times on the website are very quick, which many people may not notice, but does matter for the overall appeal of the site. There is a featured section on the homepage of the site that gives customers insight into their best sellers. With the amount of times I have been on the site, checking for the items on the wishlist to be in stock, I notice that this is constantly updated.

The descriptions of each product are filled with information about how to purchase, and what needs to be done in order to purchase the item you want, whether it is a firearm or an 80% lower. I liked that because it saved me from having to go to their FAQ page in order to be sure on what I needed to do to make my purchases.

How Is Steel Fox Firearms Customer Service?

For many, including me, decent customer service matters a lot. It is the quickest way to a 5 star review or a 1 star review. And oftentimes, it is the one thing that will throw away a potential customer or keep them forever. I am pleased to say that I experienced exceptional customer service from Steel Fox Firearms. Pete, the owner, is a gentleman and a scholar. I was able to get help from him with my transfer and he gave me some information about the AR-15 kit that I also bought.

Almost directly after purchasing my firearm, just a Glock 19 gen 5, I received a message from Pete, requesting that I get in touch with my FFL dealer with my order number to verify the transfer of the FFL copies. I got in contact with them, got the process taken care of, and the same day, I received a tracking number. Pete thanked me and my Glock 19 gen 5 was delivered later that week.

I purchased an 80 lower AR-15 build kit, and on that same thread, I texted Pete with some of the concerns I had about the building process and the specs of the parts. He was able to answer my questions in a timely manner which I really appreciated.

How is Steel Fox Firearms  AR-15 80% Lower Build kit?

The AR-15 build kit I bought is working pretty nicely.  In fact, I haven’t had a single issue with it besides the Gas block being a little loose when I initially fired it. I am now about 500 rounds into it with pretty decent results. I like that I am able to get a nice AR-15 kit for $500 with minimal issues.

Here is all that comes in the Steel Fox 80% lower AR-15 build kit:

  • A2 AR-15 Upper Receiver
  • Stainless Steel .223 Wylde Spiral Fluted Barrel – BearClaw Barrel
  • .223/5.56 Bolt Carrier Group – Nitride
  • 15″ Keymod Handguard
  • Mil-Spec AR-15 Charging Handle
  • .223/5.56 Stainless Steel Muzzle Break Flash Hider
  • AR-15 80 Percent Lower receiver
  • Mil-Spec AR-15 Lower Parts Kit
  • A2 Stock Assembly 6 Position Adjustable Buffer Tube

It performs very well, I was able to get some picatinny rails for it to add on some extra attachments that I wanted, and I have been to the range several times with it. It is a type III hardcoat anodize that is still holding strong to this day.

Milling out the 80% lower was pretty easy, I used the drill press jig that they offer and some youtube tutorials. The jig does come with instructions which Pete was nice enough to send me in our email thread.

How is the pricing of Steel Fox Firearms?

The pricing is typically one thing people want to know about, and I am pleased to say that the  pricing from Steel Fox has been the most consistent and fair that I have seen from most websites out there.  I don’t want to give them any special awards or anything, but you can definitely find decently priced guns on their website.

Not only are the prices decent, On both orders I made with them, I received a 10% off coupon code for a future purchase. I used to actually buy my Glock 19 so I came out of that one even cheaper than the original listing price.

Shipping prices weren’t too bad. They use two carriers to ship depending on if the item being purchased is a firearm or not. They ship UPS ground on orders of firearms, and USPS for anything else, which keeps the shipping pretty low.

Is Steel Fox Firearms Worth it?

By way of criticisms of the company, I don’t really have any to give. I genuinely enjoyed my experience shopping with Steel Fox Firearms to the point where I feel a little rewarded. And that is the kind of experience customers should have. The customer service was great, The products were shipped in a timely manner, and the quality of their in house products was up to par. I am pleased to add Steel fox to my list of recommendations of great online gun stores.
